5 Simple Ways to Enjoy the Outdoors Today

If you’re anything like me, you crave the feeling of sitting on the edge of a cliff overlooking the vast mountain range before you, or you feel alive when exploring the unknown areas of the world. We might not always be able to have a grand adventure due to other things in life like, money, family, time, etc. But, we can always find a way to get out in nature and enjoy the sunshine (or just the vibes if its not sunny – can’t hate on a good rainy day).

Here are some of my favorite ways to get outside and enjoy nature on a daily basis. There is no extensive planning, no cost, and lots of feel good endorphins.

1. Take a Walk Around Your Neighborhood 🚶‍♂️

One of my favorite things to do is go for a walk—and luckily, it’s my dog’s favorite too! Well, that and playing ball. I always say, “A daily walk keeps the doctor away!” It’s such a simple activity, yet it has the power to turn a gloomy day into a good one. Even my boyfriend, who isn’t the biggest fan of walking, can’t deny how great he feels after a quick stroll around the neighborhood.

You’re almost guaranteed to feel refreshed afterward—unless, of course, you run into that one neighbor you’ve been avoiding. In that case, maybe invite them along and turn it into a social event. Two birds, one walk!

2. Have a Picnic in the Park 🧺

As someone who works from home but loves being outside, I often need a change of scenery. One of my favorite ways to mix things up is heading to the park with lunch in hand and working right there. It’s the perfect way to soak up some sunshine while staying productive.

Bringing a packed lunch or dinner and enjoying it outdoors—whether with your pet, a partner, or just a great book—can be a simple yet refreshing addition to your day. A little fresh air and a change of pace can do wonders for your mood and focus!

3. Go for a Short Hike ⛰️

As someone who grew up in the mountains and moved to the beach – a very flat location, I have missed going on hikes. However, you can still hike in flat locations or basically anywhere there is an outdoor location… so everywhere.

I use AllTrails to locate the trails in my area. This is a great way to find locations you may not even know exist! A short 20-30 minute hike can help you disconnect from screens and reconnect with nature. Look for local parks or nature preserves with beginner-friendly trails if you’re new to hiking.

4. Try an Outdoor Sport 🧘‍♀️

There are many ways to enjoy the outdoors and be active. Some of my favorite ways to explore the outdoors are by running, biking, playing tennis, or paddleboarding. There may be a cost to buying the necessary products for whatever activity you choose to do. However, it is well worth it for the excitement of a fun activity while getting your sunshine.

Another option that has zero cost is outdoor yoga or meditation. Step outside and stretch, breathe, or practice mindfulness in the fresh air. Find a quiet spot in your backyard, a park, or even a beach, and let nature enhance your relaxation and focus.

5. Watch the Sunrise or Sunset 🌅

How could something so seemingly simple be so beautiful? If you really need some mental clarity or peace of mind, a sunset or sunrise is better than any medicine I have yet to find.

There’s something magical about watching the sky change colors. Set aside a few moments to watch the sunrise with a cup of coffee or unwind in the evening with a sunset view. It’s a simple way to practice gratitude and enjoy nature’s beauty.

Final Thoughts

Getting outdoors doesn’t have to be complicated. Even small steps—like stepping onto your porch for fresh air—can make a difference. So, take a break from screens, step outside, and let nature work its magic!
