I’ll share more about these incredible advantages in future posts, but trust me, the positive impact is truly compelling!

I recently started incorporating meditation into my morning routine and have noticed a significant improvement in my daily mood. Creating a calming space for meditation can help prepare you for a successful day and life.

This post will give you all the necessary items to set up your calming meditation space today!

Must Have Items for Your Calming Meditation Space

1. Meditation Pillow

Meditation Pillow

Let’s start with the basics—your seat. Yes, you can meditate anywhere: in your car, on a park bench, or even lying in bed. But having a designated cushion, like a meditation pillow (also called a zafu), makes a world of difference. It not only supports proper posture but also signals to your brain that it’s time to slow down and tune in.

There are tons of seating options out there, from cushions and benches to comfy chairs. The goal is to find what works best for your body. Personally, I love my zafu—it provides just the right amount of support while still keeping me grounded.

2. Plants

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know how much I love nature and being outdoors. So, of course, I had to include plants in this list! Adding greenery to your meditation area not only beautifies the space, but it also connects you to the calming energy of nature.

Plants improve air quality, boost your mood, and create a sense of peace that naturally encourages relaxation. Whether it’s a low-maintenance snake plant, a calming lavender pot, or even a few sprigs of eucalyptus in a jar—bringing in those natural elements really enhances the vibe of your space..

3. Calming Decor

I love wall decor! There is just something about it that brings everything together and makes me feel even cozier.

When adding wall decor to your meditation room or space, opt for something simple or an inspirational quote that will serve as a foundation for your meditation practice.

Having decor on the walls can bring purpose to your practice. I love collecting art from local artists when I travel. Seeing these before I start my practice allows me to set an intention of gratitude.

Whatever intentions you would like for your daily meditations, decor can be inspiration, so find something that works best for you!

4. Lighting

Meditation Lighting

Lighting makes a huge difference in how a space feels. Soft lighting invites calmness, and it helps your nervous system relax. I’m a fan of natural light, so I try to meditate near a window when I can. But when that’s not possible, a soft-glow lamp or fairy lights work beautifully too.

If you’re able to take your practice outdoors, even better! There’s something incredibly grounding about meditating with the sun on your skin and the sounds of nature around you. Plus, getting natural light early in the day has all sorts of wellness benefits.

5. Candles and Incense

Candles could also be categorized as lighting if you want to use them instead of a lamp. However, even if you have other lighting options, I still recommend adding a candle to your room for your meditation practice.

There is even a specific type of meditation that utilizes candles, called trataka or candle gazing. Focusing on the flame during meditation can improve focus, memory, mental health, and more.

Another use for adding a candle to your space is to have a scent that you associate with calmness. For example, the scent of a forest might bring back calming memories for you.

If you’re not fond of scented candles, try out incense for a mood-boosting and calming effect. Check out this incense holder, which is perfect for meditation.

6. Sounds and Music

Sounds can make a meditation even more calming. Imagine sitting on the beach listening to the waves guiding your focus in and out with the water. It gives your mind something to focus on and creates a rhythmic anchor to guide your breath.

Adding sound through sound machines or Tibetan Singing Bowls can enhance your practice and guide you into a truly meditative state.

If you don’t know how to use Tibetan Singing Bowls but still want the sound for your practice, consider buying this Quietbliss Tibetan Singing Bowl Machine for a hands-free listen!

Setting up your meditation space doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Even a small corner of a room can be transformed into your personal sanctuary. The key is to create an environment that feels welcoming and conducive to mindfulness. By incorporating just a few of these elements, you’ll be well on your way to cultivating a deeper and more consistent meditation practice.

Embrace the journey of self-discovery that meditation offers, and let your calming space be a reflection of the peace you seek. What elements will you incorporate into your meditation haven first?
