3 Powerful Morning Routine Habits to Boost Your Health

This post is all about the three simple things I’ve started incorporating into my morning routine that have made a noticeable difference in my life.

Morning Routine

I have never quite had a consistent morning routine. I usually wake up and choose whatever I feel like doing (it typically starts with coffee). However, as I grow and learn on my wellness journey, I have strived to achieve a routine I can get into each morning.

I always thought I had to wake up super early to get things done, and sometimes, depending on the day, I do. But there are certain habits that I have slowly started adding to my mornings that, regardless of the time I wake up, I always have time for.

Below, I will go into more detail on these three powerful, yet simple habits I’ve started to add to my morning routine that have made all the difference in my everyday life.

Benefits of Having a Morning Routine

It can be difficult to get out of bed sometimes. How many times do you typically hit snooze on your alarm? I know I’ve hit it way more than I should have, and usually end up feeling groggy while rushing out the door. This leaves us unmotivated and sets us up to feel rushed or maybe frustrated.

There are many reasons to start adding healthy habits to your mornings. By waking up and getting your day started the right way, not only are you reducing decision fatigue, but also setting yourself up for success for the day.

Having a routine first thing in the morning can decrease stress, increase productivity, and improve mental health overall. Hopefully, once you add a few healthy habits to your morning, you’ll feel as optimistic as I do about the rest of your day.

So, while creating a morning routine will benefit your day, it’s important that you give yourself time to add a few simple steps. I guarantee you won’t regret waking up 20-30 minutes earlier after you realize how good you feel!

Here are the three things I have added to my morning routine that help me set up my day for success!

1. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic practice involving swishing oil around your mouth for a specific time. This ancient practice has many health benefits, including reducing harmful bacteria, plaque, and gingivitis, as well as teeth whitening (though this is not “proven”).

Many health issues and diseases start in the mouth; I highly recommend watching The Root Cause to learn more about this. There has been controversy over the claims made in this film, but everyone should research for themselves.

The very first thing I do when I wake up is take a spoonful of coconut oil (I’ve recently switched to GuruNandu Oil Pulling Mouthwash) and swish it around in my mouth for 2-20 minutes. When starting out, you may need to do a shorter time; however, try to build up to at least 10 minutes for more benefits.

I have been consistently pulling oil for nearly a month now. Below is a picture of when I started and after 2 weeks of oil pulling with unrefined coconut oil.

The lighting in the second picture is a bit different, but the plaque that was in between my teeth has been reduced significantly for only 2 weeks. I plan on continuing to oil pull and giving you all updates as I continue on this journey.

2. Meditation

A new must-do for me every morning is to meditate. Even when I am rushing, meditation helps ground me and bring me back to myself, making me feel less in a hurry and sets me up for a successful rest of the day.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I was “doing it right,” but I quickly learned that meditation is deeply personal—there’s no perfect way to do it. Some mornings, I sit silently and focus on my breath for five minutes. Other times, I use a guided meditation from an app like Happier or YouTube, especially when I need help calming a busy mind.

I like creating a cozy meditation space with a soft blanket or meditation pillow, my favorite candle or incense, and sometimes even a calming playlist in the background. These little details make it feel like a ritual instead of a task.

Since adding meditation to my routine, I’ve noticed I start my day with more intention and clarity. I’m less reactive to stress and more tuned in to how I want to show up in the world each day. It’s honestly one of the most transformative practices I’ve added to my life—and it only takes a few minutes.

Whether you’re brand new to meditation or returning after a break, just giving yourself a few peaceful minutes in the morning can shift your entire mindset.

3. Morning Sun + Movement

The third thing I’ve started adding to my mornings is simple: getting outside and moving my body—even just a little. Sometimes it’s a walk around the block with my coffee in hand, other days it’s stretching on the porch or doing a few yoga poses in the yard. The key is fresh air and natural light.

Morning Routine Outside

Getting sunlight in the morning helps regulate your circadian rhythm, which improves sleep and boosts mood. Pairing that with gentle movement gets the blood flowing and wakes up your body in the most natural way. It doesn’t have to be a full workout—just enough to feel present and energized.

I’ve found that moving in the morning connects me to nature and brings a sense of calm and gratitude before I jump into the day. It’s also a moment to breathe, reflect, and sometimes just be. On days when I start this way, I feel more balanced and ready to take on whatever the day brings.

Conclusion

These three simple habits—oil pulling, meditation, and getting outside for a little sun and movement—have truly transformed how I start my mornings. They’ve helped me feel more grounded, energized, and connected to myself before the busyness of the day takes over.

Remember, you don’t have to overhaul your entire routine overnight. Just start with one habit that speaks to you and build from there. Morning routines aren’t about perfection—they’re about intention. It’s about carving out just a little space each day to care for your mind, body, and soul.

If you’re just beginning your own morning ritual, give yourself grace. Some days will feel easier than others, and that’s okay. The goal is to show up for yourself in small, meaningful ways that set the tone for the day ahead.

Let me know if you try any of these habits or have your own favorite morning rituals—I’d love to hear what works for you. Here’s to slow mornings, new routines, and feeling our best—one sunrise at a time.
